Pathfinder Reservoir

Sitting on the North Platte River about 47 miles outside of Casper is Pathfinder Reservoir. With 117 miles of shoreline, Pathfinder Reservoir and its expansive waters are controlled by Pathfinder Dam. For a helping of local history, visit the Pathfinder Interpretive Center to learn about this engineering feat, one that has been in place since the early 1900s. For incredible views of the area, set out on the 1.7-mile-long interpretive trail near the dam. Additional amenities include campsites, a marina and restrooms.

When it comes to recreation on Pathfinder, fishing is the top attraction. During the winter, Pathfinder is one of the most popular destinations for ice fishing, specifically for walleye, trout and perch. The reservoir also hosts the HAWG Ice Fishing Derby every January.

Nearby Pathfinder National Wildlife Refuge is a prime location for wildlife watching, fishing and camping. Plus, it offers plentiful bird-watching opportunities with more than 40 types of birds calling the refuge’s wetlands and grasslands home.
