Overview
Casper took its name from old Fort Casper, an 1860s frontier army outpost which today draws large numbers of visitors every year. Now known as Fort Caspar, it was named after Lieutenant Caspar Collins who was killed in the 1865 Battle of Platte Bridge against the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe. Fort Caspar Museum's grounds feature reconstructed fort buildings and Guinard's Bridge as well as a replica of the Mormon Ferry that operated in Casper from 1847-1849. Head inside the Museum where you may walk through Casper’s first 100 years and learn about the community’s history. Changing exhibit galleries feature a variety of displays about the West and Central Wyoming history, and the Museum Shop carries over a thousand titles and many unique gifts.
