48 Hours in Casper
With so much to see and do in Casper, it might be hard to know where to begin. So to help, we’ve compiled a two-day itinerary to get you started.
Whether you're in town for a Wyoming High School State Championship event, concert at the Ford Wyoming Center, or maybe you're just passing through and haven't been fully convinced to stay for a couple of days, you can mix and match these activities to create a perfect 48-hours in Casper.
Day 1
Adventure Starts Here
Fuel up for day one at Johnny J’s, an iconic local diner with a 50's theme known for amazing breakfast, cinnamon roles, pies and milkshakes.
Hit the trail (or mountain road)
No matter the season, it’s probably a good time to hit the mountain. If you’re up for a hike, we recommend the Bridle Trail that begins at Rotary Park. If you’re more in the mood for a cruise, you can meander on Casper Mountain Road all the way over the summit and continue on to scenic Muddy Mountain on the backside of Casper Mountain for stunning views, especially in the fall.
Recharge + Fuel Up
After a morning exploring, you’ve likely worked up an appetite. Our best advice: a burger at Wyoming Ale Works. With a large and unique menu that includes the likes of a Bacon PB&J burger (trust us, it’s delicious), you’ll easily find something to curb your appetite.
Shop Local
After you’ve refueled and recharged, it’s time to go downtown. Peruse dozens of shops filled to the brim with the creations of local makers. Highlights include Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, Wyoming Shirt & Gift, Mountain Sports and Mustard Seed.
Dinner + a Show
In the summer, David Street Station, Casper’s live music and events venue, has concerts, movies, farmers markets and other events several nights a week. If you’re more interested in an indoor experience, the historical, and newly renovated, Rialto Theater has a variety of upcoming comedy and live music performances.
There are several local eateries to help you savor the flavor of Wyoming in our walkable downtown area. Looking for something very Casper? The Branding Iron offers locally sourced meat and spirits with a drool-worthy menu. The Branding Iron’s Kona Burger was awarded Wyoming’s best burger by The Travel Channel in 2019. If your crowd is all 21+, The Gaslight Social has a great menu, beer and cocktails with a lively environment. Other popular downtown picks: Racca’s Pizzeria Napoletana, Dsasumo, Wyoming Rib & Chop House and The Office.
Retire for the Night
Casper offers a wide variety of accommodations. You can also pitch your tent or park your RV at one of the county’s 10 campgrounds.
Day 2
Rise & Shine
With an early start, you may be able to catch one of Casper’s famous blazing sunrises. An early start will also help you get a great table at one of Casper’s very popular breakfast spots: Eggington’s. Kick off the day with their phenomenal omlettes, savory scrambles or their french toast that is basically a work of art.
Experience the Legendary North Platte
The best way to experience the world-famous North Platte River is to just get in it. Spend the morning on the river floating, canoeing, kayaking or fishing. Need gear or advice? Don’t worry. If you’re not up for a full immersive experience, the Platte River Trails system offers all the views with a much drier encounter and is especially scenic in the winter.
A Historical Lunch
Take a break for lunch at one of Casper’s most unique restaurants: The Hangar. Aptly named, The Hangar was an actual airplane hangar at the original Natrona County Airport in 1927. Now, it is one of the area’s most popular restaurants.
Get a Dose of History
After lunch, get ready to be amazed by Casper’s storied past. Spend the afternoon soaking up the area’s history by taking the self-guided downtown walking tour, you can grab a pamphlet from our office downtown at 139 W 2nd Street. Or meet some of Wyoming’s earliest residents at the Tate Geological Museum, home of Dee the Mammoth.
Dinner & a Nightcap
For dinner, head to FireRock. This local favorite has a unique and delicious menu featuring gourmet burgers, cravable salads and sandwiches. Then, enjoy a nightcap from their creative cocktail menu. Our recommendation: a moscow mule featuring one of Backwards Distilling Company’s distinct spirits.
