When it comes to fishing in Wyoming, Casper is the state's premier destination. Casper and Natrona County are home to some of the most passionate fishermen in the world, and to many of them, fishing is a year-round activity. It doesn’t matter if it's 75 degrees and sunny or 10 degrees and snowing, our devoted fishing community has proven that you can enjoy American Angler Magazine’s #1 Big Fish Destination in the winter just as much as you can in the summer. And, while not everyone knows it, most of the largest fish are caught during the winter months.

If you're ready to go fishing in Casper this winter – from ice fishing in Wyoming to casting a line on the North Platte River – here are a few things you should know.

Yes, Winter Fly-Fishing on the North Platte River is a Real Thing

Our friends at Wyoming Anglers say there’s no better time to fly-fish the North Platte than in the winter. The river is less populated, the weeds aren’t as heavy and temperatures aren’t (always) as bad as most people assume. Wyoming has some of the most beautiful bluebird days during the winter and the cold here comes without much humidity. This means when the temperature is in the mid 20s or 30s and the sun is shining, your experience on the water can be incredibly peaceful and enjoyable.

Grey Reef is a section of the North Platte River and is deemed one of the best fly-fishing destinations for trout in the U.S. The Upper Grey Reef is thought to be the best spawning habitat on the river, with many of the larger fish migrating to this section of Grey Reef in February. More fish in a smaller section provides incredible winter fly-fishing just a short drive from Casper. \

In addition to Wyoming Anglers, the Ugly Bug Fly Shop is also a great resource for fly-fishing and they share fishing reports throughout the year.

Ice Fishing at Pathfinder Reservoir

Pathfinder, located about 45 minutes from Casper, has been a reliable location for ice fishing in Wyoming over the years. Its waters are home to walleye and rainbow trout and each year, it's the location of the "HAWG" Ice Fishing Derby. It takes place in late January/early February and combines ice fishing with cash prizes, as well as raffles and chances chances to win in a few categories, including largest fish by weight.

A New Hot Spot For Ice Fishing

An easy 29 miles northwest of Casper (and located off Highway 20/26) is Goldeneye Reservoir. In the past, this reservoir has been known to be fairly unexciting during the winter, however that has changed in the last few years. A hidden gem, it has almost no traffic during the week and only a couple groups on the weekends, which means it will feel like you have all the ice to yourself. At Goldeneye, it's possible to catch 10-pound rainbow trout, 6-pound cutthroat trout and 3-pound brook trout.
