Avid fishermen from around the world dream of fishing the legendary waters of the North Platte River. Each year these anglers come to Casper hoping for the catch of a lifetime! Lucky for them, Casper has many experienced guides, fantastic fly shops, and committed local stewardship of this iconic river. One of the important key partners in this stewardship is the Dan Speas Fish Hatchery!
Located along the west bank of the North Platte River near the Bessemer Bend Historic Site, Dan Speas Fish Hatchery is approximately a 20-minute drive west from downtown Casper turning off of Wyoming Highway 220. They accept reservations for guided tours, but you're also welcome to tour the facility at your own pace. Just remember to pick-up the tour pamphlet from the information board located right next to the parking spaces before you get started.
Who Should Visit The Fish Hatchery?
Hint: This is a trick question! Of course, the answer is everyone! Whether you were born in waders and casting a line or you know nothing about fishing at all, you absolutely should visit the fish hatchery. Fishing enthusiasts will learn more about the unique behavior of the different species of fish spawned at the hatchery and where they're released in Wyoming's waterways. Fished trout for forever but wanting to try your hand at fishing for carp? Besides booking a capable guide you should also take a trip on out to the hatchery. Non-fishermen will enjoy discovering the process of spawning and raising fish to maintain the population levels necessary to steward the health of the rivers and lakes in our region. Most fish begin life at a similar size and are almost indistinguishable to the untrained eye, but as you'll learn on your tour, hatcheries have more than a full time job caring for the specific needs of each species until they're the appropriate size to release into the wild.
Speaking of beginner's just starting to catch the fishing bug, pick up a fishing license and rod before heading out to the hatchery. When you're done with your tour you can also enjoy the two-mile Interpretive Trail that connects to Jessica's Pond, otherwise known as one of the best spots around to start fishing for beginners. Don't feel like hiking? That's okay it's just a few minutes drive from the hatchery and does have its own parking lot. Practice your cast and build your confidence in the North Platte River Flycaster's Memorial Access Area and Jessica's Pond before heading on out to the rest of the river. The seven full-time personnel at the hatchery will be more than willing to answer any questions that you might have about this area during your visit. You'll soon be showing off your skills fishing in Casper and hopefully catching your dream fish too!
Fun Fact: Dan Speas Fish Hatchery produces approximately 2.3-million fish annually.
